The Encyclopedia of Stitches edited by Karen Hemingway:  This is a wonderfully illustrated book with over 245 stitches grouped by the type of stitching and includes counted thread, free embroidery, cut work, smoking, and canvaswork.  Over 20 projects are included to practice each skill. This would be excellent for anyone wanting to experiment with a variety of techniques.
